Click here for the Resource "My Parent's Live Apart"
This booklet is intended for children and youth living in Newfoundland and
Labrador, ages 10 to 15 years, dealing with parental separation and divorce. It is
meant to provide some basic information about family law and give them an
idea of the processes that parents may go through when they separate or
divorce. It is not meant to get into any technical details of the law. Children
and youth often want basic information to better understand what their
family is going through. Many questions can arise and parents may have limited
tools to help inform their children about legal concepts and terms in a way
that is understandable. This booklet is an information tool that may be helpful
to answer some of the questions that can arise. Some children may need help
reading or understanding this booklet. That is where an adult may be needed
to step in and assist the child. We suggest that you first read the booklet
on your own to better familiarize yourself with the topics that are discussed
within it. The booklet covers a variety of topics such as parenting arrangements,
the emotional impact of separation on children and youth, safety, and
child support. Definitions of commonly used terms are included, as well as a
section on where to find help. The publication includes frequently asked
questions, as well as activities for readers to do.

Grade Three Games Club

I'm very happy to say that our Grade Three Games Club is up and running, and the kids are having a great time. We meet at 3:00 every Tuesday afternoon in the Learning Commons Room, and spend an hour playing a wide variety of board games.

In the weeks that we've been doing this, I've made note of a few of the benefits I've seen, aside from the simple fun of playing a game. The kids:

  • are learning new games that involve strategy and skill
  • are learning to problem solve
  • are playing with students/peers they might normally not play with, thereby expanding their friendship base
  • are learning to read instructions to get clarification on how the game is meant to be played
  • are engaging in play that does not involve "screen time"
  • are learning to take turns, wait their turn, and work through disagreements effectively
  • are learning valuable sportsmanship skills

Game Club is open to all Grade Three students at Roncalli Elementary. Thanks to all who have participated so far!

December 15th

On Thursday, December 17th, Roncalli will be organizing a waste-free lunch and recess day. Students and parents are encouraged to pack snacks and lunches with reusable containers, leaving no unnecessary waste. To stay in a 'green' frame of mind, students are also encouraged to wear green (and some festive red, if they choose).  We plan to organize several waste-free days through the year, but of course, any day can be waste-free day.

The average person in Newfoundland and Labrador generates about 4.5 pounds of waste every day. We all need to do our part.

The Roncalli Christmas Tree has been set up in the main lobby of our school. This is the tree that will be decorated with the 'recycled materials' ornaments that the students create. It's a great family activity that sends a positive message. Take something that seemingly has no purpose (bottle caps, empty yogurt
containers, jar lids, etc) and create a beautiful recycled Christmas tree ornament. While helping the environment, it's also a wonderful keepsake that students can retrieve before Christmas break and bring home for the family to keep. There will also be prize draws for those who bring in an ornament. Students can begin bringing ornaments on Friday, December 11th.

The Roncalli Environmental Agents are back in action this year. One representative from each classroom has been selected to be an advocate for change and protecting our environment. We had a great meeting, and have come up with some exciting events and initiatives that we plan to organize this year.

Thanks to all the students who volunteered for this important role.

We watched a video clip in our first meeting, a video that helped us set our minds to what we want to do. Click HERE to see the video. At the 4:00 mark of the video, David tells a story that sums up the work that all of us, young and old, are trying to do. It's pretty powerful.

From the Roncalli Environment Committee:

To encourage the practice of 'reduce, reuse and recycle' during the holidays, we are once again challenging students to make a Christmas tree ornament out of “garbage”.  Use old Christmas cards, yogurt containers, jar lids, pop bottle tops, etc.  Beginning Tuesday, December 9 , students can bring their ornaments to the office to be displayed on a Christmas tree. Teachers will give students one coupon for every ornament they make to enter their name for prizes to be drawn for on Thursday, December 18 - one for primary, one for elementary. Have fun!

Roncalli Mission

At Roncalli Elementary, we inspire each other to learn every day in a constructive, nurturing and respectful environment. We strive to work cooperatively, encourage responsibility and recognize diversity. We are a proud community!

Roncalli Elementary School serves 420 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school's current population is organized in 21 classroom groupings. Roncalli Elementary School is a neighbourhood school serving the Airport Heights community. The boundary for the school covers the western side of Torbay Road from Airport Road to Harbour View Avenue including the Hussey Drive area, Major's Path and streets adjacent to it and Airport Heights Drive and streets that branch from it. The housing development in our surrounding neighborhood is proceeding and thus there is greater opportunity for increased student enrollment at Roncalli. Approximately 80% of the students travel to and from school by the school bus service.
